Wagh's all-round showing boosts Indians

Luton Town and Indians moved into a promotion spot for the first time in the Saracens Herts League Championship on Saturday as they beat Stevenage by seven wickets at Wardown Park.

The hosts restricted their visitors to just 170-9 from their 58 overs as Mohammed Irshad took 3-44 from 16 overs and Sachin Wagh 3-35 from 15 overs.

Ali Hassan made a solid start for Luton with 26 as the home side reached 40-2, before captain Wagh and Dhaval Naik put on 126 for the fourth wicket.

Wagh finished on an unbeaten 70 from 79 balls and Naik 50 not out as Luton reached 171-3.

Badal Naik’s half-century wasn’t enough to prevent a narrow four-run loss for the IIs at Sawbridgeworth IIs in Division Three B.

Zainul Abadeen took 5-35 as Luton bowled their opponents out for 166.

Abadeen then hit 38 before departing after hitting his own wicket, whilst Hitesh Chauhan made 35.

It was Naik however who was the main contributor with 53, but Luton were dismissed for 162 falling agonisingly short.

The IIIs drew with Welwyn Garden City IIIs in Division Five B.

Yousuf Alim, Mushtaq Dalvi and Dharmesh Mistry took two wickets each as Welwyn finished on 204-8 from their 53 overs.

That left Indians with 47 overs to achieve their target, but they didn’t seriously threaten doing so, Masood Mahmood hitting 43 and Haroon Afridi an unbeaten 38, as they held on at 137-8.

Opening bowlers Gagan Kashyap and Zahid Khan took seven wickets between them in a losing cause for the IIs against Queens Park in Division Two.

Khan took 4-41 and Kashyap 3-47 as Luton dismissed the visitors for 221.

However, despite Peter Bonham’s 25 and Karanjit Singh’s 23, no other batsman could reach more than 13 as Indians were dismissed for 138 to fall to an 83-run loss.

Indians IIIs completed the club’s only win on Sunday as they beat bottom side Dunstable IIIs by 13 runs at Lancaster Avenue in Division Three.
