Dunstable Town put in their best pre-season performance in a 1-1 draw against a feisty and hard-working Ware at Wodson Park at the weekend.
Lee Roache had given the visitors a well-earned lead at the break before the home side rallied and caught the Blues’ defence napping, snatching a goal through Paul Cooper.
Dunstable supporters’ reservations over previous matches were put at ease as Roache settled well into the game with the support of Chris Marsh and Adam Watkins.
The Blues put the home side under early pressure and managed to take the lead after five minutes as Roache latched onto Marsh’s through ball and slotted the ball past Jack Smith in the Ware goal.
Ware responded well and looked to make the most of counter-attacks, and it required sharp defending from Zac Reynolds and James Kaloczi to prevent the hosts from levelling the scores.
Dunstable had chances to extend their lead before the break but Roache miscued a presentable header and Marsh fired a good effort just wide of the post.
Tony Fontenelle rang the changes for the visiting side, and opted to replace his attacking trio of Roache, Shaw and Marsh to gauge his full set of options.
The visitors enjoyed the best of the early stages of the second half as Daniel Talbot forced Smith into making a fine stop, but Ware struck back in the 65th minute.
A long-range effort cannoned down off the bar, and looked to have initially crossed the line before Cooper followed up to make sure, taking advantage of a sleepy Dunstable back four to nod the ball into the empty net.
Despite Ware’s equaliser, the visitors continued to create chances, and substitute Ryan Plowright was next to go close as he saw his effort deflected out for a corner
Panic in the Ware defence from the proceeding corner nearly saw Smith fumble the ball to the feet of a Dunstable attacker, but the defence successfully hacked the ball clear.
The Blues failed to take advantage of another late set piece as three men leapt to meet a corner, with none of them managing to turn the ball goalwards.
