Hatters duo Danny Hylton and Jordan Cook believes the new EFL Trophy format will lead to some ‘weird’ group stage games this season.

During Wednesday’s draw, Town were put in the same group as Premier League West Bromwich Albion’s academy, plus League One sides Gillingham and Millwall.

“It’s going to be a bit weird playing against a West Brom U21 team, but you can only play who you’re up against.”

On the competition, Hylton said: “People have been going a bit mad, there’s all these group stages, but I’ve not really been paying too much attention to it. I saw there were group stages and saw the teams that we got, it’s bit crazy, but some good games in there.

“It’s going to be a bit weird playing against a West Brom U21 team, but you can only play who you’re up against, so we’ll look to have a real go and see how far we can go.”

Cook himself echoed the thoughts of Hylton, as he said: “I think any group is going to be quite tough, it’s just interesting to see how it’s going to work.

“It’s a bit weird isn’t it, but it’s a competition and one that we’re going to try our best in.

“You want to win every thing you’re a part of. We’ll be going into every game and hopefully, at the end of it, winning a trophy.”

Cook himself was part of a Premier League academy earlier in his career, with boyhood club Sunderland.

He continued: “Hopefully it will work out well and it’s going to be competitive, but I’ve played in the U21s myself, for Sunderland.

“Sometimes the games can get a bit slow and a bit false.

“Obviously, when we’re playing we’re not going to be making it that way, so hopefully we can turn teams over. That’s the plan anyway.”

Meanwhile, boss Nathan Jones added: “It’s a real tough group, so we’ll see how the new format pans out and what people do, but our priority is the league this year and FA Cup, so we’ll select accordingly.

“But we’ll just see, I think it’s a trial year, I don’t want to say anything untowards, I know the club will have an official line on everything, but we’ll see.

“Whatever happens, we’ll put a strong enough side out that will be competitive.”
