Hatters midfielder Cameron McGeehan was delighted to finally be put on the spot for the club at the weekend.

The 20-year-old has set his sights on being Town’s regular penalty-taker since joining the club, only to see Craig Mackail-Smith claim the honours this season.

“When I’m needed I’ll happily step up and dispatch them as well.”

With the striker off the pitch on Saturday though, once Dan Potts was fouled in the area, McGeehan was quick to take his chance.

He said: “I scored two in the FA Youth Cup final a couple of years ago and I’d always offered to take them.

“Jake Howells was here before, so thought I was going to get my chance, but Mackail-Smith grabbed the one against Portsmouth, put it away, so he gets the next one.

“I’m quite happy to have Macca on the pens as he works so hard for the team and doesn’t always get the chances that he probably wants because of the way we’re playing.

“When I’m needed I’ll happily step up and dispatch them as well. We knew that I was going to be taking them and a few of the lads said just make sure you get the ball and take it.

“I had a few practices the day before luckily it came off.”

Manager John Still was always confident in the midfielder’s reliability from the spot as he said: “We showed with the game against Stoke here, we’ve got a few people that are comfortable to take a penalty and he bashed it in.”

While, team-mate Alex Lawless hailed the youngster’s belief, saying: “It’s clear for us all that’s not a problem for Cam (to take penalties).

“It’s great to see a young lad with confidence like that.”
