Flashback to 2012 VIP relaunch of Houghton Regis Leisure Centre after 100,000 revamp

Campaigners fighting for the reopening of the pool at Houghton Regis Leisure Centre were thrilled to hear it will be back in the swim this year.

The pool is set to reopen once it is refurbished, now that Central Beds Council has awarded a new management contract for the centre to Stevenage Leisure.

The firm will also manage leisure/sports centres in Biggleswade, Flitwick and Sandy.

Bruce Hallam, of the Houghton Regis Leisure Centre Action Group, said: “We’ve worked so hard to get to this point, and would like to thank our members, local town councillors, our MP and many schools in the area for their continued support. We are thrilled that the best possible solution has been reached.

“We can’t wait for the pool to reopen, knowing that all sectors of the community will benefit, from the very young to the very old.”

Central Beds executive councillor Brian Spurr said: “When we did our £100k refurbishment of the Houghton Regis gym, the user numbers shot up and people were really impressed with the facility.

“The swimming pool was the one sticking point and now Stevenage Leisure Ltd have shown us that it’s viable, it’ll be fantastic to open it again.

“We’ll also be investing in the pool-side facilities to really make it a great centre.

“We’ve worked closely with both Houghton Regis Town Council and the Leisure Centre Action Group to get to this point and we’ve really appreciated their support and input.”

Houghton town clerk Clare Evans said the town council wished to thank Central Beds Council “for listening to the community of Houghton Regis”.
