Company step it up as they go Stepping Out

The Luton-based theatre company ACT Company present Stepping Out from Tuesday July 26 to Saturday July 30.

The play follows the efforts of an amateur tap dancing group in North London. The members of the class are led by their long-suffering teacher and the taciturn and miserable class pianist.

Director Alan Clarke said: “It’s a well-known play but hasn’t been performed locally for a very long time so we thought it was high time it stretched its legs.

“Last year we stage an epic stage play production of ‘Les Misérables’ so we wanted to make sure that this year’s project was something completely different. The play is full of comedy, but by the end the audience will learn each characters’ reasons for attending the class every week, some of which are quite tragic.

“The bond they all form is very touching and this is what enhances the comedic moments. Without that undercurrent of pathos, the play wouldn’t work quite as well as it does.’

Co-director and choreographer Megan Clarke added: “The dancers go from having two left feet through to becoming capable of performing a full tap dance. It’s been enormous fun during rehearsals and we are confident that our audiences will be thoroughly entertained.”

The show runs nightly at 7.45pm.
