Barton teenager takes to the boards at Milton Keynes

Barton teenager Rebecca-Louise Smith is no stranger to performing – she’s been taking part in school productions ever since she can remember.

But appearing as a munchkin in The Wiz – from youth project Stage Experience at Milton Keynes Theatre – is by far her biggest challenge so far.

“I’d never done a big audition before and didn’t think I’d make it anyway because my dancing’s quite weak,” she confessed. “But I was thrilled to be selected and it’s been really exciting meeting so many new people.

“We’ve been rehearsing every day and I can’t wait for the first show. But it’s quite nerve-racking – I have been having butterflies.”

The 15-year-old attends weekly classes at Barton’s Upstage Academy and also takes singing and piano lessons.

She has her sights set on becoming a primary teacher but would like to continue in the amdram world.

The Wiz is a musical version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and features a live orchestra and up-and-coming local talent. The cast will perform three shows at Milton Keynes Theatre from August 8 - 9.
