See re-creation of the Great Train Robbery at railway show

The diorama has been built by members of Luton Model Railway Club to depict the events of August 8, 1963 when a gang of robbers stopped a Royal Mail train at Bridego Railway Bridge, Ledburn.

A spokesman said: “The events of 50 years ago have always has some interest for us. We do not condone the actions of the event, but it is a fact that the Great Train Robbery has become a part of the national consciousness for many people over a certain age. It was agreed that with the level of interest in the run up to the 50th anniversary, portraying the scene as it unfolded would make an interesting display.”

The diorama is part of the club’s 31st exhibition which takes place at Stopsley High School, St Thomas’s Road, Luton on Saturday, April 12.

Dave Boutwood, the exhibition manager, said that he has put together an impressive show for the public with 22 layouts including three new O gauge layouts belonging to club members, plus nine trade stands and four preservation societies. There will be a range of layouts covering most gauges from N to O.

The exhibition opens at 10.30am and closes at 5pm. Admission is adults £5, concessions £4, and children £3. Families (two adults/two children) are £12. Light refreshments and free parking are available.
