Lidl has submitted a planning application for a new supermarket on Houghton Road in Houghton Regis, which would mark the second store for the area.

The brownfield site is currently occupied by a car dealership - which is to be demolished by the vendor to make way for the new redevelopment. If approved, it would come with 125 car parking spaces - including ten disabled spaces, ten parent with child spaces and a further two for electric vehicles.

The announcement comes just days after the firm received planning permission for a supermarket on the Linmere Development, following consideration by Central Bedfordshire Council.

Both new supermarkets are tipped to create around 40 new roles each for the area and both will feature facilities including a 1,414m sales area, an in-store bakery, customer toilets and parking for both cars and bicycles.

Lidl has appointed construction firm Mitnija to build both stores, with work on the Linmere site due to start later this month. The build is expected to take six months, with a view to opening this autumn.

Lidl regional head of property, Jason Buckley, said: “We are delighted to have submitted a planning application for our second Houghton Regis store.

"Our exciting plans are set to create around 40 new positions which would be fantastic for the local area, delivering our high quality and affordable produce to even more of the community.

"We look forward to sharing and discussing our plans with everyone.”
