Coronavirus latest: 14 new cases in Luton in past 24 hours

It follows two days without any new reported cases in the borough, with the total now standing at 798.

Neighbouring authorities Central Bedfordshire has 781 (+5) cases while Bedford has 704 (+7).

Six coronavirus deaths were recorded at Luton and Dunstable Hospital over the weekend.

NHS England figures show 265 people had died at the L&D Hospital as of 5pm on Sunday, June 7, increasing by six since Friday.

Of 188 hospital trusts in England, the L&D has the 29th highest death toll.

In today's Public Health England figures, a total of 289,140 people across the UK have been confirmed to have the virus, rising by 1,387.

The number of people in Britain who have died with Covid-19 stands at 40,883. This represents a daily increase of 286 - over five times that of yesterday (55).

At today's coronavirus daily briefing, Business Secretary Alok Sharma confirmed plans for non-essential retail to begin trading again next Monday, June 15.

The government is facing increasing pressure over its two-metre distancing rule, which some critics claim is impossible for schools and leisure industries to adhere to.

While Spain and Canada also have a two-metre rule, other countries such as France, Denmark, China and Australia have a one-metre restriction in place.

Today, Mr Sharma confirmed that the two-metre rule remains under review.
