Coronavirus latest: 48 new cases confirmed in Luton today

48 new coronavirus infections have been confirmed in Luton over the past 24 hours, according to figures from Public Health England.

The total number of cases in the borough now stands at 2,711 (+48).

Yesterday (Monday), saw 45 new infections confirmed in Luton.

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 1,974 (+28) cases, while Bedford's figure stands at 2,071 (+24).

There have been 762,542 lab-confirmed cases in the UK, up by 21,331 since yesterday.

43,967 deaths have been recorded within 28 days of a positive test, with another 241 people reported to have died.

Fears continue over rising daily Covid-19 figures, with hospital beds 96% occupied across England and Wales.

Today, it was announced Wales would go into complete lockdown until November 9, with all but essential retail closed off to the public.

Manchester has been forced by the government to enter Tier 3 of the lockdown, after difficult talks with the government.

Describing the decision as "brutal", Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said: "This is no way to run the country in a national crisis."

He labelled the £22m support offered by the government as "frankly disgraceful".
