Coronavirus latest: Dramatic swing back to zero new cases in Luton as UK records smallest death toll since March

The three-day peak included more new instances of COVID-19 in the borough than the rest of May's figures combined.

As a result, Luton's current total remains at 722 cases for a second day running.

In other parts of the county, Central Bedfordshire recorded 620 (+1) cases while Bedford stands at 611 (+1).

Across the UK, a total of 259,559 have been diagnosed with coronavirus, rising by 2,409 since yesterday.

The number of people with coronavirus who have died in the UK stands at 36,792, increasing by 118 in the past 24 hours. This represents the smallest daily death toll since March.

Today's coronavirus daily briefing was again dominated by the fallout of Downing Street advisor Dominic Cummings' trip from London to Durham with his family while suffering COVID-19 symptoms.

Despite calls from some of his own MPs to sack Mr Cummings, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stood by his aide and said he acted "responsibly, legally and with integrity".
