Coronavirus latest: Over 100 new cases confirmed in Luton today

109 new coronavirus infections have been confirmed in Luton over the past 24 hours, according to figures from Public Health England.

The total number of cases in the borough now stands at 5,992 (+109).

The case rate in Luton has decreased from 254.4 per 100,000 to 252.1 per 100,000.

There were two deaths recorded in Luton (220), one recorded in Central Bedfordshire (257) and one in Bedford (200).

Nationally, the number of coronavirus cases has risen by 16,170 and now stands at 1,659,256.​

The number of deaths has risen by 648 to 59,699.

Luton is now in tier two (high alert) along with the rest of Bedfordshire. According to government advice, in tier two:

> You must not socialise with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble in any indoor setting;

> You must not socialise in a group of more than six people outside, including in a garden or a public space – this is called the ‘rule of 6’;

> Businesses and venues can continue to operate, in a Covid-secure manner, other than those which remain closed by law, such as nightclubs;

> Pubs and bars must close, unless operating as restaurants. Hospitality venues can only serve alcohol with substantial meals;

> Hospitality businesses selling food or drink for consumption on their premises are required to provide table service only and stop taking orders after 10pm;

> Places of worship remain open but you must not socialise with people from outside of your household or support bubble.
