Coronavirus latest: Two new infections as Luton reaches 800 milestone

Two new coronavirus infections have been confirmed in Luton in the past 24 hours, according to Public Health England.

It comes after 14 new instances were recorded yesterday (Tuesday), which followed two days of no new cases.

The total number of Covid-19 diagnoses in the borough now stands at 800.

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 684 (+3) cases while Bedford's figure has been revised minus one at 703 (-1).

There have been no further coronavirus-related deaths reported at Luton & Dunstable Hospital since Sunday.

NHS England figures show 265 people had died at the L&D Hospital as of 5pm on Sunday, June 7. Of 188 hospital trusts in England, the L&D has the 29th highest death toll.

Across the country, there have been 290,143 infections at an increase of 1,003 over the past 24 hours.

A total of 41,128 people have died with coronavirus in the UK, up by 245 since yesterday.

At today's coronavirus daily briefing, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said two households could now meet up as a "support bubble" without social distancing.

But, he said, they can only form a "bubble" with one other household and must all self-isolate if one of them becomes ill.

MPs were told today that the UK's death toll would have halved if lockdown had begun a week earlier. The claim was made by Professor Neil Ferguson of Imperial College London while giving evidence to the House of Commons' science committee.
