Since last Friday, McDonald's has allowed only takeaways from its 1,300 UK and Ireland restaurants, but it has now joined fellow high street brand Costa Coffee in closing its doors for the time being.

But cheeky fast food fans were determined to have their last bite outside the Chaul End branch in Luton, even if it meant a long wait in the car!

Another added: "There was queues coming out of the car park!"

It is understood McDonald's will work with local community groups to distribute leftover food.

In a statement, the company said: “We have taken the difficult decision to close all McDonalds restaurants in the UK and Ireland by 7pm on Monday, 23 March, at the latest.

“This is not a decision we are taking lightly, but one made with the wellbeing and safety of our employees in mind as well as in the best interests of our customers.”
