This nostalgic image is just one of many featured in a new Dunstable calendar
Sharon Knott and Sharon Warboys, who run the Don't Let Dunstable Die campaign, fell in love with this Gazette photo, showing children and a dog playing happily at Edlesborough Ford in August 1957.
So they’ve expanded the range of their annual Dunstable calendar and included it among a collection of nostalgic pictures which, otherwise, are all about Dunstable.
The photos have been supplied by the Dunstable Local History Society or are from the Gazette’s Yesteryear series.
Our regular readers will recognise most of the photos, which include a war-time scene of a bren-gun
carrier in the high street and snow drifts outside the old Red Lion hotel, but the 2019 calendar reprints the pictures in larger size on glossy paper.
It’s now on sale at many Dunstable locations, price £5.
The ford featured here allows traffic to drive through the Ouzel stream, formerly known as the Bradenham, near Slicketts Lane.
It wells up from a spring a few hundred yards away on the other side of the main Tring Road. Edlesborough watermill is nearby.
Yesteryear is compiled by John Buckledee, chairman of Dunstable and District Local History Society
