Curtain Call: Putting their (egg) heads together in darkly amusing play

Four Eggheads who had more than their fifteen minutes of fame when they took part in the BBC quiz show are returning to the stage in The Little Theatre.

Director Julie Foster first read The Female Of The Species while flying to Glasgow to film Eggheads, and cast two of her brainy teammates in the black comedy.

Inspired by true events, the play centres on the fictional 1970s Women’s Liberation Movement pioneer and internationally renowned author Margot Mason.

While working on her latest publication in her country home, she is visited by a young student called Molly Rivers, the daughter of one of Margot’s most dedicated followers.

Margot is initially flattered by the idealistic student’s visit –until Molly handcuffs her to the desk and puts a gun to her head.

While it might not sound like the most amusing of situations to be in, what follows is hugely funny.

Julie said: “When I first read The Female Of The Species on the way to Glasgow, I burst out laughing on the plane. At that point I knew I just had to direct it, and I was convinced that both the audience and Rep actors would love it too.”

Julie said there were so many talented actors auditioning for the play that she could have cast it twice, but the parts eventually went to Angela Goss, Ally Stafa, Roger Scales, Josh Thompson and the Eggheads teammates Chrstine Hobart and Joe Butcher - supported by fellow Egghead Richard Foster on lighting and special effects.

Julie said: “I’m so thrilled with my fantastic team.”

In early rehearsals the actors were finding it challenging not to laugh out loud, but hopefully they will hold it together to present the wonderfully comic show to their audiences.

From March 15 - 23 at The Little Theatre, Dunstable.
