Dark play with poison and politics

Murder might be something that crosses many people’s minds when it comes to politics, but in Dead Ringer, we’re encouraged to see the funny side of it all when the dark comedy comes to the Gordon Craig theatre.

It’s the eve of the general election and the Prime Minister rather inconveniently drops dead, seemingly from a heart attack.

Two cabinet members who fear they need the PM’s charisma to get re-elected plot to hire an out-of-work actor to replace the deceased.

The ‘dead ringer’ is only supposed to fill in until after the election is won, but power goes to his head and he doesn’t want to give up his role – until he discovers the fate of the real Prime Minister.

The witty thriller, presented by Ian Dickens Productions International Ltd, has a dazzling cast of former soap stars including Chris Ellison (The Bill), Tony Adams (Crossroads), Keith Drinkel (Coronation Street), Joanne Heywood (Grace & Favour) and stage actor David Callister.

I’m expecting Yes Prime Minister with a touch of Poirot. With its sharp humour and agonising suspense, this witty thriller keeps audiences guessing right up to the explosive conclusion.

While you may be chuckling at the dark jokes throughout, you’ll still be thinking ‘Who dunnit?’
