Even the uninitiated will be familiar with the legendary musical, famous for its audience participation, raucous behaviour and naughty jokes.

Franks said: “It’s the kind of thing I would have been terrified of coming to before I was in it, and taking on the role was like taking a transatlantic flight away from my comfort zone.

“I’d worked with the director Christopher Luscombe on a ‘serious’ Alan Bennett play before, and when he asked me to be in Rocky my initial reaction was, absolutely not, but that’s quite a good reason for doing a new job, if you are scared. Now I love it. It’s so funny and different. It’s a cocktail of things I’ve never done before - musical, dancing, stand-up comedy.”

As the Narrator, Franks has to deal with hecklers throughout, which he says is something that “never gets easier”.He said: “I do kind of like it - you realise they come because they love the show and they’re shouting out because they’re so into it. It keeps it fresh every night. People love it.”

Franks said he would like to direct a musical now having seen how they work.

As for Rocky, which screeches into Milton Keynes Theatre on July 15, he said: “You’ll know more songs than you think, they’re all very catchy. People come dressed up to the nines, waving flags and glow sticks, dancing in the aisles. It’s enormous fun.”
