UK Decay are back in town

Luton post-punk legends UK Decay play their first home town gig in three years at the Hat Factory on May 10.

The gig will mark the release of New Hope for the Dead, their first full-length studio album for 32 years.

UK Decay led the emerging post‐punk scene in the early 1980s and were credited with coining a term that spurned a movement, when they were the first to use the term ‘goth’ in a music press interview.

Their singles regularly topped independent music charts around the world, with extensive tours taking the band across the UK, Europe and US.

Since reforming three years ago they have gigged across the UK and Europe, and describe New Hope for the Dead as a “sonic assault built upon the politics of dissent”.

Produced by Grammy-nominated Chris ‘The Dark Lord’ Tsangerides, who has worked with Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest and Depeche Mode, the songs cover everything from the fracturing nature of society to the twin evils of extremism and bigotry.

“We’re not here for a nostalgic reunion. We’re here because we’ve got something to say.” said singer Steve ‘Abbo’ Abbot. “There’s been three or four generations of music since we split up but no one’s really taken up the mantle of kicking against a world of apathy, discrimination and totalitarianism.”

The May 10 show is part of a ‘Live And Gigging’ event run by Luton Culture in conjunction with BBC Introducing and will include a live question and answer session.

The event will also offer one local artist or band a one-to-one session with UK Decay and a support slot during their gig. Visit the Hat Factory website at www.thehatfactory.org to find out how to get involved and for ticket details.
