WEDNESDAY

Adults with learning difficulties arts and craft sessions. Every Wednesday 10.30am to 12.30pm and Saturdays from 11am to 1pm at Arttrend, Arundel Road, Luton. Social and creative activity for adults with learning difficulties, engaging in all types of art and craft work such as painting in acrylics, papier mache, salt dough, cross stitch, rug making etc. Please see the website www.arttrend.co.uk and go to Art ALD, then see the gallery of work already done. Luton Irish Forum holds a weekly Tuesday and Wednesday Club from 11am to 1.30pm at 102 Hitchin Road. This is a great chance to meet old friends and make some new ones. Refreshments are all included along with soda bread, scones with jam and monthly chicken and chips. Entry costs £1, plus optional £3 for two games of bingo and a raffle.

Author Dennis Carey talks about his book, The Ditcher, which tells the story of Irish company Bord na Móna moving into the small town of Bangor Erris in County Mayo in the 1950s. Their mission was to harvest enough turf to fuel the new power station at Bellacorrick, six miles away. The talk takes place at Luton Irish Forum at 11.30am. Joe Longthorne performs at the Grove Theatre, Dunstable. The talented artist began his career over three decades ago with appearances on Junior Showtime, followed by a grounding on the tough Northern club circuit. His big break came in 1981 when he was a finalist on London Weekend Television’s Search for a Star. This led to appearances at the London Palladium with Bob Hope and The Talk of the Town. The Utter! Lutonia Fringe event at the Hat Factory, Luton. The night aims to be powerful and enlivening, full of bubbling words and running rhythms, voice and mind connecting directly in a room alive with ideas. Utter! Spoken Word brings the freshest talent from the Edinburgh, London and international spoken-word circuit. It’s compered by Lee Nelson, the keeper of Luton’s live-poetry flame, veteran of the Glastonbury and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals and compere of the regular Utter! French circus company Circa Tsuica is coming to the Hat Factory, Luton with a feel-good blend of daredevil acrobatics, ripping brass rhythm and added local flavour. Luton Irish Forum’s Baby and Toddler group meets at 102 Hitchin Road, Luton LU2 0ES, every Friday from 9.30am to 11am during term time. Recommended donation of £1 per adult and 50p per child. Let’s All Dance, a company which specialises in presenting condensed dance shows for children, visits the Library Theatre, Luton, with The Pesky Pirates: A Hip Hop Adventure at 11.30am abd 1.30pm. Irish comic Ed Byrne has built a reputation of critical and popular acclaim with his nerdy and curmodgeonly persona. Ed has also increased popularity over his career with appearances on various BBC radio shows, and as a regular panellist on TV shows such Mock the Week and Have I Got News For You.
