Abuse survivors tell their stories

AN ‘innovative and uncompromising’ new film to raise awareness of domestic abuse and the help available to victims is being launched next week.

‘Don’t Suffer in Silence’ is a documentary showing the lives of three real-life survivors of domestic abuse, using Central Beds Council services within Bedfordshire. The documentary was suggested and put together by the three women based on their own experiences.

Central Bedfordshire resident, Susan Smith (not her real name), who speaks about her own experience of domestic abuse in the film, said: “When we decided to put the film together it was from a determination to let anyone suffering from domestic abuse know that they were not alone and that help and support was available.

“It is very easy to feel isolated and we all felt it was important that people know it doesn’t have to be this way.

“The name of the film says it all. If you are a victim of domestic abuse you don’t have to tolerate it, tell someone who can help.

“You can call the 24hr Freephone National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247 and start getting help now.”

Councillor David McVicar, in charge of Safer Communities at Central Beds Council, said: “The three women who take part in the film are an inspiration to us all. Through their courage they will help other survivors to realise that they too can get the support they need to stop the abuse.

“Their stories will also be invaluable as a DVD training resource for our partners working with survivors of domestic abuse across Bedfordshire.

“The clear message is that if you are a victim of domestic violence, please don’t suffer in silence as help and support is available now.”
