Bin a hard day

Edlesborough councillor Chris Poll spent a day on the bins as he fulfilled a promise to the manager of the Pembroke Road refuse and recycling depot.

Shortly after being elected district councillor representing Edlesborough last May, Mr Poll visited depot manager Bob Bryant, his senior council official mentor.

Eager to learn more about his operations, Mr Poll offered to spend a day working with refuse collection crews.

Fast forward to June 18 this year and Mr Poll went through seven hours of health and safety training in preparation for the big day on June 22.

“They were under the impression I was to sit and monitor exactly what they did but when I explained it was my intention to complete a day as a loader they were surprised.

“I was absolutely shattered I can tell you and my respect, already very high, was increased immensely for the job they do every day. I did suffer over the weekend especially with sore feet.”

Edlesborough will be affected by Aylesbury Vale District Council’s move towards a more popular recycling model, including new food, glass and cardboard bins.

However, staff at Pembroke Road have voiced concerns over the implementation of a more complex system which may see them woork much longer days.

Chris said: “The staff they are concerned, like many residents, as to the impact of the changes to come.

“I would say however that AVDC must reduce substantially the amount they commit to landfill. It costs £80 per ton to dump and is just so bad for our precious environment.”
