It is with real pride that I am able to announce that Ashton Square toilets (which are managed by Dunstable Town Council) have been awarded gold as part of this year’s Loo of the Year Awards.
Each year toilets from around the country enter the awards to be judged on cleanliness, fixtures and fittings, décor and maintenance.
The inspection team can award bronze, silver, gold and platinum after complex scoring of each facility. Dunstable Town Council staff were praised by the judges for their cleaning of the facilities. Public toilets are an important part of the high street, which is why we want to aim for the platinum award in 2019.
A physical condition survey of Ashton Square toilets was undertaken on behalf of Central Bedfordshire Council (who own the facilities) in July. Central Bedfordshire Council has agreed funding of £75,000 for the toilets, which will improve the look of the toilets internally and externally. The main works will be carried out in the men’s toilets, this will include; new urinals and sink units as well as some re grouting and a deep clean. The accessible and women’s toilets are due to have re grouting and painting as well as new hand dryers and baby changers. A start date has not been
confirmed, but I hope that they will be completed by the end of the year. Platinum is definitely in our reach for next year, due to this capital investment.
