Busway to cause motorists misery

MOTORISTS are advised to allow extra time for their journeys around Luton town centre as roads will be closed for ‘essential’ work on the £89million Luton Dunstable Busway this weekend.

The town is likely to be busy on Saturday as Luton Town FC host York City at Kenilworth Road in the FA Trophy and St Patrick’s Day Festival celebrations take place in the town centre.

Telford Way will be closed between the roundabout at Dunstable Road near Hatters Way and the Crawley Road car park from 10pm on Friday to 5am on Monday, March 19, and motorists are advised to use alternative transport where possible.

Councillor Roy Davis said: “Works have been carefully scheduled throughout to minimise disruption wherever possible, and particularly to avoid any clashes with Luton Town home matches where this can be achieved. On this occasion however no other solution was possible. These works were always planned for this weekend and cannot be delayed, while Luton Town’s match is a previously unscheduled additional cup tie. It is essential that the bridge works at Telford Way, and also forthcoming works at Guildford Street, get under way in earnest now in order to avoid potentially more serious disruption to the arrival of the Olympic Torch Relay and the Love Luton 2012 Festival in July.

“We will do everything possible to keep traffic moving as freely as possible, including changes to traffic light timings. We wish to apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

There are further road closures in the next few weeks, see www.lutondunstablebusway.co.uk for a full list.
