Charity begins on the Green

Toddington mum Kate Collins, 44, had never had any experience in retail when she opened the Little Shop on the Green in the village.

But the former car rental contract saleswoman didn’t let that stand in her way.

“I suppose I was a little naive,” she confessed, smiling.

Her husband Joe had bought the former curtain business as an office for his construction company and Kate decided to keep the shop front, rather than lose another village outlet.

“Initially I wanted to do something with Fair Trade but it evolved into charity,” she said. “I hadn’t thought about anything like staff then various friends – and strangers - asked if they could come and work as volunteers.”
The Little Shop on the Green sells contemporary but affordable gifts and children’s goods which Kate sources at trade fairs.

All profits go to charity and every two months Kate or her customers nominate a new one. Benficiaries so far include Womens Aid, Changing Faces and Alzheimer’s.
