Cockernhoe man fined over £100 for wasting police time with false report

A young man from Cockernhoe has been fined for wasting police time after making a false report to an officer.

The 21-year-old was sentenced at Stevenage Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, March 11, after pleading guilty to making the false report.

The court was told that the complaint was made to a police constable on December 3 last year at Stevenage.

He was given a conditional discharge for six months and fined a total of £106, to be paid within 14 days.

> If you make a false report, make up a crime or lie to the police, you could be charged with wasting police time or the more serious offence of perverting the course of justice. The offence carries a maximum penalty of six months imprisonment.

> Less serious cases may result in a fine of £80 for people aged 16 or over and £40 for under people under 16 years old.
