Dog charity giving puppies a ‘Chance’

Greyhound Rescue West of England’s (GRWE) Eastern Region team took Cienna, a lurcher, from a dog pound when she was about to be put to sleep as a stray.

“National data suggests that every hour in the UK, local authorities euthanise a happy, healthy dog – simply because they have no home to go to,” said local GRWE volunteer Katie Golding.

Having rescued Cienna from her fate, the charity discovered it was taking on more than it expected. “It’s unusual for us to have puppies looking for homes, but it is a possibility when dogs have been living as strays,” said Katie.

GRWE events coordinator Gulie Butcher said: “It takes a lot to rescue and rehome just one dog, but nine extra puppies is bound to strain our resources and budget.”

GRWE has been running a ‘New Life’ appeal, designed to raise funds and awareness for the charity’s work to help dogs in need on their way to a new and better life.

“Puppies are, after all, the ultimate example of new life. We are thrilled to have received donations to help us care for Cienna and her puppies and other dogs like them,” said Karen Phillips, Eastern Region coordinator.

Work has already started to find homes for the puppies, which could be difficult as most of their potential adopters are looking for mature, sedate ex-racing dogs.

“Dogs coming out of racing are very sedate – they just want lots of cuddles, short walks and a comfortable bed. Rehoming bundles of joy like these means we need a different kind of home,” said Julia Purton, who is responsible for Eastern Region’s dogs.

The puppies were named Amber, Lexi, Angel, Flokie, Topaz, Purdy, Rolo, Chance and Chester in a ceremony where suggested names were selected by canine celebrity Freddie, who flies the flag for the charity’s sponsor a dog scheme.
