The award-winning events were first held at the end of 2013 and have so far seen more than 900 vehicles being checked. Now drivers have the chance to get their cars checked at four events in Central Bedfordshire and Luton this month.

They are taking place between 10am and 4pm on the following dates:

Tuesday, 3 February, B&Q in Luton

Wednesday, 4 February, Sainsbury’s in Biggleswade

Thursday, 26 February, Regus Group UK in Luton (a dedicated session for local businesses only)

Friday, 27 February, Central Bedfordshire Council’s headquarters in Chicksands, Shefford (a dedicated session for local businesses only)

All vehicle checks will be performed by a group of specialists from breakdown firm Autohome and tyre supplier and fitter ProTyres.

Cars will have their tyre pressures and treads checked, along with their lights, windscreen wipers and fluids. Everyone who has their car checked will receive a sheet detailing the results of the check.

Councillor Budge Wells, Deputy Executive Member for Communities at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “As a motorist you can do some very simple things to ensure your vehicle is safe, including checking tyre pressures each month, making sure that all of the lights work and that tyre tread is at least 1.6mm deep across the central three-quarters of the tread.”

Cllr Dave Taylor, Environment portfolio holder for Luton Borough Council, said: “The free vehicle checks taking place this month are a great opportunity to make sure your car is safe and road legal. I would really encourage everyone to take advantage of these, rather than finding out later and facing a fine, or even worse having an accident.”

Road safety officers will be available at each event to offer advice, and everyone who attends will receive a free drivers’ pack containing high visibility vest, ice scraper, an emergency foil blanket and tyre depth gauge along with advice regarding driving safely.
