Children from schools across Dunstable and Houghton Regis are getting ready to compete in the Big Pedal, the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge.
And they will be travelling safely thanks to Central Bedfordshire’s Travel Choices and Dr Bike, Adam Bell.
Before setting off on their journeys to and from school, youngsters can have their bikes checked by qualified bike mechanic Adam as part of Travel Choices’ biggest-ever Dr Bike session.
Adam is well known at local schools where he has carried out repairs on hundreds of bikes and scooters, arriving by bike towing a trailer full of the tools of his trade.
Adam said: “It’s so important that children’s bikes are safe and easy to ride, but some parents don’t know what to look for.
“I deal with a lot of brake issues including snapped or frayed cables and worn out brake pads. It also helps to make sure the chain is oiled and the tyres are pumped up properly. Just a few little jobs can make a world of difference.”
Central Beds councillor Nigel Young said: “With their bikes and scooters in tip-top condition, there will be no stopping local children in this year’s Big Pedal. “Cycling and scooting to school is great for everyone, getting children and their families active and reducing congestion by taking cars off the road.
“It’s really important, though, to be safe so I’d urge everyone to take advantage of the excellent services of Dr Bike.”
