People are being urged to follow the rules of social distancing and to only make essential visits to the household waste and recycling centre.

Capacity will be limited and fewer people will be able to enter the site at any one time.

No vans or cars with trailers are allowed and social distancing measures will be in place to protect the health of residents as well as staff.

The tidy tip will be open between 9am to 5pm, 7 days a week.

Councillor Tom Shaw, portfolio holder responsible for waste and recycling at Luton Council, said: “We realise that for some it has been an inconvenience that our tidy tips have been closed and we appreciate their patience. However, we were following government guidelines with regard to unnecessary travel and social distancing in order to keep residents and our staff safe and well.

“I must emphasise that the reopening is not a return to normal. Public safety, and that of our staff and the need for social distancing is of the upmost importance. Wherever possible we still encourage people to store waste at home, or use other ways to dispose of it or try to avoid generating it in the first place before making what may be unnecessary trips to the tidy tip.

“Put simply - please only consider visiting if it is genuinely essential, where you have extra waste that is causing a health risk”.

For those who do decide a trip to the tip is necessary, they will be required to follow measures such as keeping windows shut while queuing and keeping a two metre distance from others once inside the site, wearing gloves and masks if possible.

A maximum of five cars will be allowed onto the site at any one time, with a strict one in one out policy.

Measures have been put in place to provide traffic management on the highway and on the site. However, it is anticipated that any trip to the site will have long delays as social distancing measures will reduce traffic.

The situation will be reviewed regularly before any decision is made to open the tidy tip on Progress Way.
