The boardings were decorated by volunteers in a project organised by Save Our Town and Little Red Creative Studios last year, as previously reported here.

Some of the panels were already frayed by weathering before Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis struck over two successive weekends.

Save Our Town stated online: "We’re gutted that Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis have devastated a number of artworks in our 'Power in Paint' project at the future home of Luton Town's new stadium.

"Hopefully, in time, there will be calm after the storms."

Artist Liz Aldous, who decorated several panels on behalf of charity Penrose, added: "Only one of the Penrose boards stayed up and we're gutted to see all the rest of the damage.

"It's such a shame. Our guys have taken what they can to our garden project Roots to see what sections we can cut out and fix to our fences."
