European health card warning

ANYONE applying for a European Healthcare Insurance Card (EHIC), or renewing one, is warned to beware of internet sites charging up to £20 to supply them online.

A Department of Health spokesperson said: “EHICs are free throughout the NHS - there is no need to pay.”

More than 28 million UK residents hold a card, which is valid for five years.

It entitles the holder to free or reduced-cost state-provided medical treatment.

To apply for or renew a card, go to www.nhs.uk/healthcareabroad or call 0845 6062030.
