Farewell to The Mall manager

LUTON Mall general manager Brian McFarland, 63, is bidding the centre a fond farewell this week after a successful career that has spanned 24 years.

He said: “I’ve been lucky enough to have worked in the heart of the town and it’s been a pleasure to work with my fantastic team and some incredible people from the police, council and chamber.”

The man who began his career with Safeway before moving to Singapore and Malaysia has seen some dramatic changes in his time, including the 1996 refurbishment and the more recent St George’s Square development.

But his charity projects are his proudest achievement.

The father-of-two said: “I’m extremely privileged to have been involved with the founding of the Safer Luton Partnership and Luton Shopmobility. It’s also been very rewarding working with the Children’s Centre.

“The Mall’s USP is its town centre position. It’s not just a shopping destination, it’s close to the council and library.

“The tenant mix is very much in the hands of market forces. It used to be banks and building societies, now it’s more mobile phones and coffee shops. It’s 100 per cent let which keeps it alive and buzzing.”

Brian is retiring to spend more time with his young sons.

He is being replaced by former Barnsley shopping centre general manager Mark Broadhead.
