Festive season not a happy one for our doggy friends

CHRiSTMAS proved to be anything but the season of goodwill for man’s best friend.

Leading greyhound charity GRWE had to rescue an unprecedented number of abandoned dogs over the period.

It has launched an appeal to find emergency foster homes for 13 new arrivals.

They include a selection of former racing greyhounds, together with hounds and lurchers about to be destroyed at dog pounds.

The sad specimens are in varying states of health and some need extensive veterinary support.

All are currently being health-checked and will be neutered or spayed before being made available for rehoming.

GRWE spokesman Graham Crick said: “It has put incredible pressure on us for both kennel space and funds.”

Greyhounds and lurchers made great pets because they require relatively little exercise – they’re usually content with two 20 minute walks a day. In addition they’re generally quiet and walk well on a lead.
