Hello to a brand new baby bongo

BIG-EARED bongos at Whipsnade Zoo have been busy babysitting a brand new addition – this bouncing baby girl (right) who was born three weeks ago weighing in at 15kg.

The beautiful big-eared calf can often be found snuggling up to other members of the herd, as well as her mum, four-year-old Hope.

Mark Holden, the zoo’s Africa section leader, explained babysitting is common with this species of forest antelope: “The calf is not always found with mum - they’re both happy to sit with other members of the group.”

The striking youngster, with her deep chestnut coat and bright white stripes, is already becoming quite independent and has started growing into her big ears.

Mark added: “When first born, bongos have huge ears and legs and the rest of the body grows into them.

“The new arrival is already filling out and looks more proportioned.

“She now ventures out into the paddock every day with the group for a fruit and vegetable scatter feed and is often seen having a run around.”

The baby is an important addition to the European breeding programme for endangered species.
