Keech Hospice Care - in a word

KEECH Hospice Care is asking people to sum up what the hospice means to them – in one word.

A random collection of those already submitted include ‘choice,’ ‘life,’ ‘laughter,’ ‘friends’ and ‘home.’

Chief executive Mike Keel said: “Hospice care has different associations for different people – positive, challenging and sometimes very surprising.

“By asking thousands of people to choose just one word to represent what the hospice means to them, we are aiming to create a picture of what our work really means to the community,”

He added there was a popular misconception that a hospice was a place where people go to die, usually from cancer.

But he claimed neither was true: “Here at Keech our ethos is about living, not dying.

“While a hospice does provide end-of-life care, we also care for people in their own homes, in day care and through counselling and support.

“Our staff help patients to live well until they die, giving them the best quality of life in the time they have left.

“Their family and friends are also included.”

The search for a single word to signify what a hospice means is part of the first Hospice Care Week which was launched on Saturday.
