‘Keep historic boundaries’ plea

A FRESH call for a rethink has been made over proposals that could put Dunstable into the Luton North parliamentary constituency.

Central Beds Council is asking the Boundary Commission to redraw potential changes to constituencies, so that Dunstable remains in South-West Beds instead, alongside Houghton Regis and Leighton Linslade. Many councillors have voiced strong concerns over the commission’s proposals.

In its submission, the council points out that Dunstable, Houghton Regis and Leighton Buzzard, are near neighbours.

It states: “Clearly, to separate them into different constituencies would simply create unnecessary divisions that have been forged over hundreds of years.”

The council believes the proposal to include Dunstable within the Luton North constituency is “contrary to the fundamentals of a broad community of interest”.

Dunstable Town Council has already mounted a petition against the commission’s idea.

The public is urged to take part in public consultation on the proposed changes, which is open until December 5.
