Lights shine at L&D launch

A VIP guest made an unexpected appearance at the launch of the Luton & Dunstable Hospital’s annual Christmas appeal on Thursday.

The president of the Royal College of Physicians, Sir Richard Thompson, joined the merry throng listening to Dunstable Rock Choir belt out a selection of seasonal favourites after three little patients switched on the Christmas tree lights.

They were four-year-old leukaemia survivor Finlay Armstrong, Imogen Smith and Jade Maltby.

Sir Richard had been at the L&D to address a meeting.

The moving message behind the Light up a Life campaign in aid of the Cardiac Centre Christmas appeal is ‘Let your heart shine this Christmas.’

Sponsors can buy a light on the tree as a gift or in memory of someone special. They cost £5 each of three for £10 and will be available right up until Christmas.

The massive 20ft tree was donated by Jakins Christmas Trees.

Building work has already started on the cardiac centre which will cost in the region of £5.5 million. It will be an important asset in Luton where there is an unusually high rate of coronary heart disease.

> You can buy a light over the phone by ringing 01582 718289. Order forms are also available from the L&D’s main reception and the St Mary’s unit.
