Local award deadline looms

NOMINATIONS close for the second annual Community Awards this Sunday.

Once again, Luton and Central Bedfordshire residents have the opportunity to nominate individuals, community groups and businesses who they think deserve a big public “thank you” for their commitment or service that goes beyond the call of duty.

Event sponsors Pictons will choose the overall ‘winner of winners’ whom they believe has done the most for Luton’s community this year. Also, for the first time this year the ceremony has an award sponsored by Luton Mayor Don Worldling who will pick his personal winner and present the award.

The independent judging panel has been broadened and now includes both Luton MPs Gavin Shuker and Kelvin Hopkins, leader of Luton Borough Council Hazel Simmons, and representatives from business, voluntary and public sector bodies across the county.

All profits will go to Luton & Dunstable Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) appeal. Community Magazine proprietor and Community Awards founder Mostaque Koyes said: “Like one in seven infants across the town, a baby in my own family needed the help of NICU. I want to ensure that the tireless and dedicated staff have even more of the vital equipment they need to save further vulnerable babies in future, and give thanks for the child in my family who was helped.”

For more details, to nominate your local hero or to donate to the NICU appeal log on to www.communityluton.co.uk or pick up a nomination form at any Luton community centre. Nominations must be received by Sunday August 14.

The Community Awards Ceremony will take place on Friday October 14 at Venue Central in Leagrave Road.
