The family-owned Nisa Local store in Toddington has won a national award for its outstanding levels of customer service.

Owned by Kishor Patel and managed by Gary Bilbrough, the store claimed the Community Retailer of the Year prize at the 2014 Convenience Retail Awards, hosted by The Grocer and Convenience Store magazines in London.

The awards recognise excellence within the convenience store industry. There are currently more than 47,000 convenience stores in the UK.

Judges were bowled over by how engaged Gary and his team were with the local area. “Gary is a shining example of community spirit,” they said. “We were particularly impressed by the way he has instilled community involvement into every facet of his store and ensures that his staff are also fully engaged and involved at all stages from inception to implementation.

“For a shop of this size, the range of activities undertaken, encompassing so many different groups within the local community, is quite remarkable. Gary – along with his staff – is a very worthy winner of this award.”

The awards were judged by a panel of retail experts.

The Toddington store is at the heart of the community it serves. For example, they pioneered ‘maths in store’ with a group of students from Parkfield Middle School, to come up with a solution to make maths more fun and less intimidating. They also host an annual Christmas party for around 100 elderly people in the village, providing everything from the food and waitress service to after-dinner entertainment.”

Mr Patel said: “Gary and his team know virtually all their customers by name and see themselves as the catalyst for knitting the community together. We’re thrilled and proud to receive this accolade and thank all our customers for their continued support.”
