Dunstable has once again answered the call to make sure struggling members of the community have everything they need to have a happy Christmas.

Major Stephen Brevitt of the Salvation Army Dunstable said: “The charity liaises with the authorities, social services, schools and children’s centres and has put together food hampers and Christmas packages for those who need them.

“This year we have been able to do 232 hampers and give packages to 511 children ranging from birth to 16 years of age.”

The pandemic has affected how many volunteers have been able to help with the logistical operation of sorting and making packages and so to prevent delays this was spaced out over a longer period of time. Donations have ranged from cuddly toys for babies to toiletries suitable for teenagers.

Major Brevitt said: “People’s generosity has been overwhelming particularly giving toys. It’s been very humbling to see.

“I think everyone is more aware than ever and the appeal has really struck a chord with people. I would like to express my thanks to the public for their support, fellow coordinator my wife Lindsay, all our volunteers and Jim Dawson.”

To see all the presents for themselves Dunstable town mayor, councillor Peter Hollick and the Lord Lieutenant Helen Nellis paid a visit to the Salvation Army earlier this week.
