Historic Dunstable pub is demolished

An historic pub in Dunstable has been demolished and will be turned into 32 flats.

The First and Last, in Church Street, stopped trading in March 2017 after serving the town for more than 100 years.

The pub has been now been demolished to make way for three and four-storey apartment blocks.

A reader sent the Dunstable Gazette before and after photos of the pub, which has now been bulldozed.

Graham Hill took the photos between March 3 and March 26.

Permission was granted by Central Bedfordshire Council for 26 one-bed and six two-bedroom flats on the site, with parking.

When planning permission was granted, Conservative Dunstable Central councillor Carole Hegley said: “I am very well aware of the housing demand in Dunstable. Something positive is needed to tidy up this site, which does lend itself to housing.

“The developer has worked with officers to get the maximum effect from this site, but also being conscious of the sensitivities locally. There are very live concerns. Parking is a burning issue in the town.”
