Luton Urban Radio (LUR) is hoping the town community will back its campaign, as many families have faced a tough financial year and may struggle to provide for their loved ones this Christmas.

The kindhearted station members are asking the public to donate items to help those most in need, whilst they are also planning a special, fun-filled event.

A Luton Urban Radio spokeswoman said: "Our current projects are a Christmas appeal where we are asking our listeners to donate non perishable food stuff, gifts and toys for those in our community who need some extra help, especially at this difficult time.

"LUR are also hosting a virtual festive jamboree event on December 27 where we aim to provide 12 hours of live music from local and international artists, live DJ sets and festive fun which we will stream on various platforms.

"Our mantra and mission is LUR, the pulse of the community."

Luton Urban Radio (LUR) is a self-funded community-based radio station and community hub, which has been on the airwaves since the mid 90s.

During that time and right up to the present day, LUR has had many homes, many presenters and many different programming schedules.

The spokeswoman continued: "From our inception, LUR has organised a variety of musical events and in recent years we have expanded into arranging a diverse array of community events such as a Community Awareness Day, held at the UKCCA, LUR Unsigned Showcase, held at the University of Bedfordshire and a sold out Comedy Show, held at Luton Urban Library Theatre.

"During the Covid pandemic we realised how important our radio station is to many members of our community and beyond. We decided to create a show entitled the Dedication show where we have had regular input from the Public Health Department at Luton Borough Council, local entrepreneurs and independent businesses owners and Bedfordshire Police.

"We have actively attracted new presenters to our platform in the last few months and are amazingly overwhelmed with welcoming on board more than 15 new presenters, taking our team total to over 55 regular DJs and presenters representing ages from 15 to 60-plus.

"We pride ourselves in providing a diverse programme schedule and are still looking to expand not only with our local community but also regionally."

The public can donate to the Christmas appeal by emailing [email protected] or calling 07725720802.
