A campaign to encourage more shoppers to Dunstable town centre has been given the go-ahead.
Dunstable Joint Committee agreed to a trial period of increased footfall campaigns at its meeting on Thursday.
Among the ideas are a Special Saturday each month, with promotions and activities to encourage shoppers, and more displays.
The Committee’s Vice Chairman, Cllr Glorian Martin said: “We’ve already seen the Morgan car display on the Square recently, and again on Saturday 5th December we hope to see vehicles from the Chiltern Vehicle Preservation Group – who knows what we might see on the Square this time?”
The Committee’s Chairman, Cllr Carole Hegley said “Added to the car displays we are working on for 2016, we will plan a Special Saturday on the first Saturday of each month, where we aim to encourage retailers to offer promotions, hang balloons outside their shops etc and we are also taking space in the Methodist Church to host some activities, exhibitions, displays to encourage shoppers and residents into the town.
“We will also be adding the trial events of the Valuation Day, specialist markets and a number of other ideas.
We welcome expressions of interest for organisations who want to use our promotional space to attract footfall – please email the Chairman, email@example.com REF SPECIAL SATURDAY if you have an idea or want to bring something interesting to the town, either on the square or in the Methodist Hall.
“We also appointed Town Champions to the committee, who are invaluable, and we are welcoming of any retailers or organisations in the town centre who want to become involved. We are also taking soundings about the best time to offer the 2 hour free parking by Central Beds.”
The Committee also received a presentation from Central Beds Council on the Market Town Programme where the Town Council can bid for up to £1million to stimulate investment, footfall etc. into the town.
The Committee will be kept informed of their bid detail.
