The Taxpayers' Alliance has launched its annual 'Town Hall Rich List' - detailing all salaries of over £100,000 for every local authority in the country.

Five such salaries from Luton Borough Council were featured on the list, although the council states these already cut to four after the emergency budget last July.

In top place was chief executive Robin Porter, who earns £181,000 with a pension benefit of £27,000.

A Luton Borough Council spokesman said: "It is absolutely right for transparency that the salaries of our senior leadership team are published. These have always been available to see on our website.

"Following last year’s emergency budget Luton Council restructured its senior management team which will reduce the spend on senior managers by more than £500k per annum. There were previously five corporate directors and there are now four.

"The salary band for the council’s chief executive is £179,259-£195,615 which is a matter of public record. This is determined nationally and is in line with councils of a similar size across the country.

"For context, Luton Council’s chief executive is responsible for overseeing more than 2,800 staff, more than 730 services, a £500m budget and capital assets of more than £3bn."
