Members of the South West Beds Constituency Labour Party have voted overwhelmingly to support Jeremy Corbyn in the forthcoming leadership election.
A packed meeting in Dunstable last night (Wednesday) concluded with a secret ballot which was held after a half-hour discussion on the merits of the two candidates.
The vote was for a ‘supportive nomination’ for either Mr Corbyn or Owen Smith and is not binding on members . All members and supporters eligible to vote will receive individual postal ballots.
“It was clear from local meetings of the three area branches making up the South West Bedfordshire Constituency that support for Jeremy Corbyn was strong,” said branch secretary, Mike Bishop.
“However I didn’t expect him to get over 90% of the votes cast. It is a pity that only members accepted up to January 12 were allowed to vote in the secret ballot which meant that hundreds of local members were excluded.”
