Primary pupils learn life-saving skills in special sessions

The specially designed sessions, held on Thursday, March 24, educated students on recognising a medical emergency and how to keep the person safe until help arrives. They also learnt how to handle someone who is unconscious using the recovery position, as well as recognising and treating a bleed. The pupuils who went on the training donated £1 and received certification as well as a Swim for £1 voucher from Active Luton, and raffle was held.

Mike Austins, head teacher at Norton Road Primary School, said: “I’d like to thank Active Luton for facilitating this tailored training session. The children took a lot away from the day and really enjoyed learning first aid which is both practical and educational. The news that we’re now one step closer to buying an AED, a potentially lifesaving piece of equipment, is most certainly well received by both staff and parents.”

Helen Barnett, chief executive of Active Luton, said: “As a community-focused charity we were delighted to support the school’s efforts to raise funds to buy a defibrillator. I hope Norton Road Primary School enjoyed the day and also learnt some potentially lifesaving skills that they can share. The use of AEDs in addition to CPR has been proven to dramatically improve survival after a heart attack and the Department of Education recommends that every school has one on hand for such emergencies.”
