And she should know - the mother-of-two and great-grandmother of eight recently celebrated her 100th birthday at an afternoon tea for 80 at the Methodist Chapel Hall in Eaton Bray.

Violet’s family, the Pipkins, have lived in the area since the 17th Century. She was the youngest of six and lost her teenage sweetheart Aubrey during World War Two.

But she spent 64 happy years with her husband, Christopher, who came to the village in search of a distant relative.

Violet was initially employed by Wallace Nurseries – famous for their carnations – then went to work at A C Delco ammunition factory in Dunstable.

Daughter Diane Griffiths said: “Mum is known for her style. She’s always loved fashion – particularly shoes. She’s never worn trousers, refuses to wear flat shoes and nothing pleases her more than a compliment about her choice of clothing.”
