Luton, South Beds and Harpenden Samaritans’ director Ian Franks said: “It was an excellent experience and we were treated like royalty. It also says volumes about our organisation and our four volunteers – Liz Ryan, Marilyn Gearing, Alan Davies and Tom Gillon – who’ve each served our community for more than 40 years.”

He added: “We were given a splendid tea before listening to debates on both sides of the house.

“Then we had a walk on the terrace and a drink in the Peers’ bar.”

Lord McKenzie said: “Samaritans do fantastic work supporting people who find themselves in difficult situations. I was especially impressed by the length of service of these volunteers and was delighted to host a little gathering to recognise their dedication.”
